Airdrie skipper Adam Frizzell reckons a lack of goals is holding his side back from full firepower in the Championship, and says they’re working on it every day.
The Diamonds drew a blank in the Highlands on Saturday as Inverness ran out 1-0 winners, giving new boss Duncan Ferguson a first home win and seven points from nine since his arrival, following a run of one win in 10.
David Wotherspoon struck in 37 minutes, collecting Nathan Shaw’s cross before creating space to score.
But though the Diamonds pummelled the Caley Jags in the second half, they left the Highlands empty-handed.
Midfielder Frizzell, 25, says they deserved more from the game, and know what they need to do.
He said: “We definitely could have got something out of it.
“We didn’t really get going in the first half but even then I thought there was nothing in it, it was a sloppy goal.
“In the second half I thought we were actually very good, but without putting the ball in the back of the net.
“That’s what has been lacking for the last couple of weeks, which is strange, because last season that was the least of our worries.
“But it’s a step up, and teams are better, so we just need to start scoring.
“We know what we need to do, and we’re working on it.”
Frizzell says it was an improved Inverness side under Everton legend Ferguson, compared to last time out in August, but Airdrie should be looking to step it up as well.
He said: “To be fair, they would probably have felt hard done-by down at Airdrie when we beat them 2-1, so that’s just the way the league is.
“Every team is good, you don’t get a week when you’ve got a so-called easy game, everybody’s up and down.
“The way we’ve bred the winning mentality in the last two years, we’re maybe a wee bit hard on ourselves for not being higher up, but if you look at the table we’re fourth, which is not bad.
“But we know we can be better, everybody knows that, and we know what we need to do, we’re working on it every day, and it will come.”
Airdrie host league leaders Dundee United tonight (Tuesday), hoping to avoid some Halloween scares, before visiting Raith Rovers in Kirkcaldy on Saturday.
Frizzell said: "It’s two big games and if we can win them we can claw back a wee bit of the head-way other teams have on us.
“These are the games you want to play in, the big games, and this is why making the step up to the Championship was so good for us.
“We’ve got a big game under the lights, and they will take a big crowd."
