Expenses scandal
The Parliamentary expenses scandal caused shockwaves through politics which was triggered by the publication by the Telegraph Group in 2009 of expense claims made by members of parliament over several years. The scandal outraged the public as details emerged of the widespread misuse of allocated expenses to MPs. It led to a public loss of confidence in politics and a raft of resignations, sackings and de-selections together with public apologies and the repayment of expenses.
