Marcus Fraser insists keeping a level head is crucial when his Saints return to action.

The St Mirren vice-captain has experienced the highs and lows of football throughout his career, from being released as a youngster at Celtic to helping Ross County land the Scottish League Cup in 2016 and the Scottish Challenge Cup in 2019.

The Buddies have had to sit and stew on their dismal 4-0 defeat to Dundee last weekend due to the international break.

But Fraser is adamant the key to St Mirren enjoying a successful Premiership season is not allowing setbacks along the way to get too deep under their skin.

He told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “It has felt like a long break.

“It comes with playing football and there are going to be ups and downs.

“We won 4-0 against St Johnstone but we didn’t get too high then.

“Yes, we were disappointed after the Dundee game.

“Of course, I still fancied us at one or 2-0 down, but their third goal was massive.

“We were throwing caution to the wind then and we should have because we had to try something. We talked about that game, learned and we will come back better.

“We came back into training and needed to be ready to learn again and take things on again.

“The Dundee result was a disappointment for the players, staff and the fans.

“We needed to get back on the training pitch working hard and that is what we did because we have an honest bunch.

“Every single one of us is working hard.

“The character is there for everyone to see and we’ve shown that all season.”

Despite the dispiriting manner of their loss at Dens Park, St Mirren are still sitting pretty in the Premiership table in third spot.

Fraser feels the Buddies must keep their focus on putting things right on the pitch, starting with the visit of lowly Livingston to the SMiSA Stadium this Saturday.

Fraser said: “When you talk about the top six or third in the league, it is still so tight.

“We just need to keep champing at the bit and keep putting points on the board, like we were doing before the Dundee game.

“We just needed to regroup and thankfully our next game is at home.

“Hopefully, we can get back to winning ways.”
