They might be rooting for Team Europe, but the Americanisation of golf lingo on Sky Sports is continuing in their Ryder Cup coverage.
The 44th edition of the transatlantic showdown from Marco Simone near Rome teed off at 6.35 on Friday morning, with Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton taking on Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns in the opening foursome. The now famous European fan anthem of "Ole, ole ole ole" rang out as they walked onto the first tee and the atmosphere is something to behold.
But there seems to be a subtle change taking place in how all square matches are being described. Traditionally, on this side of the pond, when golfers can;t be separated in matchplay, their level or drawn game is referred to as all square. But as we saw in the Solheim Cup last week, which Europe retained against their American opponents, Sky has taken to saying "tied."
It's also being used on the broadcasters' scoreboard graphics in the top left hand corner of the screen. Scottish golf great and Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie took aim whilst watching the Solheim Cup last week and has urged Sky to go back to using all square.
Monty posted on social media: "@SkySportsGolf please a match is all square NOT tied. It is only a tied match when we are playing in the USA and this week we are not. Thank you."
However, commentator Ewen Murray seems to be a stickler for tradition. The Arbroath native is sticking to all square during the early morning coverage.
