Iconic director James Cameron is said to be 'ready' to direct a drama series based on the doomed journey of the Titan sub to the Titanic wreckage.
James, who directed the multi-award winning 1997 movie Titanic, is reportedly said to be having discussions with a major streaming platform about the production just weeks after the disaster happened, writes The Mirror.
There were five passengers on board the small submersible, and they all sadly lost their lives after their journey went catastrophically wrong. It's thought that the vessel imploded "in under a second" on its journey to the bottom of the ocean.
And following the disaster, which was reported worldwide, Cameron is allegedly set to try tell the story on the small screen.
A source told The Sun: "The Titan disaster is already being looked at as a major series for one of the world’s biggest streamers — and James is first choice for director. It is a subject close to his heart.
"He told the story of the Titanic so compassionately it feels like a natural step for him to take this on. Retracing the steps of those on board the Titan is a massive undertaking but there would be a lot of time, money and resources dedicated to it."
It's understood that Cameron has some big-name stars in mind for the potential production such as Matt Damon and Kumail Nanjiana.
Cameron, who is an expert on deep-sea exploration, spoke out about the Titan mission at the time when the search and rescue team was frantically looking for missing vessel. Following the announcement that debris had been found of Titan, Cameron told BBC the Coast Guard search "felt like a prolonged and nightmarish charade where people are running around talking about banging noises and talking about oxygen and all this other stuff".
He added: "I knew that sub was sitting exactly underneath its last known depth and position. That's exactly where they found it."
He then said that he had deep concerns about the exploration, adding: "A number of the top players in the deep-submergence engineering community even wrote letters to the company saying that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers and that needed to be certified and so on."
This news of the potential production comes almost 30 years after his iconic Titanic film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet broke a number of box office records. The movie also won three Oscars in 1998, including Best Picture.
Cameron's representatives have been contacted for comment.
